Sedgwick Reserve has an outdoor kitchen available for users camping and staying in the tent cabins. This includes:
- Propane Grill
- Burner
- Warmer
- Propane Fire Pit
- Refrigerator
- Microwave
- Outdoor sink
- Pots, pans, plates, and utensils (located in cabinets adjacent to the refrigerator. Pots for the grill are located in a cabinet near the grill)
Below are operating instructions. Please note that you are responsible for cleaning up everything you use, being safe around fire and hot surfaces, and for making sure everything you turn on is turned off before you leave. Failure to responsibly use the outdoor kitchen will result in termination of use privileges.
Grill Operating Instructions
The grill is connected to a propane tank that is always turned on. Before using the grill carefully remove the cover, which can stay off during the duration of your stay. To start the grill, you simply need to push in the dials on the front of the grill, and turn it up to the desired flame height. There are buttons on the right of the grill that will turn on lights inside the grill and over the dials. Please note the following:
- Do NOT leave the grill unattended
- Make sure all dials are set to off when you are finished cooking.
- Do clean the grill with the grill scraper located in the cabinet under the grill.
- Replace the grill cover. Make sure grill has cooled before butting cover back on
Burner Operating Instructions:
Next to the grill is a burner. To start the burner, you push the dial to ignite and turn to the desired heat, like you would a normal stove.
- Do NOT leave the burner unattended.
- Make sure it is turned off before walking away.
- Clean any spills or crumbs before closing burner lid.
Warmer Operating Instructions:
Under the burner is a pull out warmer. To use, open the drawer, insert food, and turn the dial to the desired temperature.
- The warmer is for keeping cooked food warm. It is not an oven and will not heat up uncooked food.
- It is REALLY easy to forget about the warmer. Please make sure it is turned off before you walk away.
Fire Pit operating instructions:
To turn the fire pit on, look for the covered outlet labeled Fire Pit, located on the bricks on the southern side of the brick grill island. Simply turn the dial to the desired time (2 hour max). The fire pit will then turn on (it takes a minute or so to light itself).
- Do NOT leave the fire pit unattended.
- A propane charge will be added to your invoice for every lighting. Please report how many cycles of fire pit time you used during your stay.
- To turn the fire pit off, either wait for the timer to run out, or manually turn the timer knob back to the off position.
- The fire pit will not relight when it is hot; be patient when re lighting the fire pit.
- Do NOT adjust the flame height. It has been set for maximum output while assuring for user safety.
Fire Pit Safety:
The gas fire pit is a welcomed amenity of the Sedgwick Field Station and we implore upon our users to enjoy it safely so no one gets burned and the privilege is not lost. Please use good judgement when using the fire pit and keep in mind at all times that open flames can be dangerous and Sedgwick’s fire season is year round.
- Do NOT sit on the pit or use it to rest plates or food platters. You can put your feet on it, but make sure chairs are situated well away from the edge of the pit so your shoes don’t melt.
- Do NOT play, rough house or sit on someone’s lap who is seated around the fire pit.
- Do NOT adjust the flame height.
- Do NOT cook over the flames.
- Know where the nearest fire extinguisher is located (hanging by the studio classroom door).
- Deploy the fire extinguisher immediately if flames from the fire pit cause something or someone to catch on fire.
