Join us for a unique opportunity to experience a land recovering from wildfire. In July 2024, the Lake Fire scorched about half of Sedgwick Reserve’s 6,000 acres. This hike will take you into the heart of the Reserve to experience the post-fire landscape firsthand with docent naturalists who will help you understand the changes the landscape is undergoing and the relationship of these natural communities to fire. This is a unique opportunity to contemplate the effects, role, and future of fire in our region.

Last hike season, we offered a moderate trail which included areas burned primarily through deliberate backburning. This hike season we are offering a strenuous trail which takes you on a trail that burned hotter and where we can better contemplate the impacts of fire on pine trees as well as oaks.

Strenuous hikes are the most challenging hikes and explore some of the Reserve’s most spectacular canyons and vistas. This hike is 4.6 miles long, 780 feet of elevation gain, takes 3.5 hours to complete, and includes steep uphill and downhill climbs. Make sure you have the physical fitness required to go on this hike. You should be able to hike about 78 flights of stairs.
